Six minute fluency is a well loved program to systematically build fluency skills for all students using passages appropriate for their reading level.  But what to do for students who are working on basic reading and pre-reading skills?  With this file, you can make customized fluency pages with students’ specific sight words or letters and sounds to target through this group activity to ensure full participation and targeted practice simultaneously.

Teaching Tips
Six minute fluency relies on student pairings where students are at similar reading levels.  An alternative meaningful pairing could be to pair a student who is working on fluency well above grade level with a student who is working on pre-reading skills.  An adult can work with the group to ensure meaningful peer coaching and to provide fluency feedback for the student who is reading above grade level.
